Can Social Media Be Ethical? We're Proving It Can

The Problem We All Know But Rarely Name
Mainstream social media has drifted a long way from what it was sold as.
1. It’s designed to be addictive
Variable reward schedules, the same mechanism slot machines use. Infinite scroll removes natural stopping points. Pull-to-refresh creates gambling-like anticipation. Notifications are timed to hit when you’re most vulnerable.
GenZ spends 4-5 hours daily on social media. 42% have been diagnosed with mental health conditions. 74% of MENA youth find it difficult to disconnect.
2. It’s engineered to enrage you
Research shows that each moral-emotional word in a post increases repost rate by 24%. Anger-expressing political tweets get 62% more algorithmic amplification than neutral ones. Toxic tweets receive 27% higher visibility.
The algorithm doesn’t care about truth or nuance. It cares about engagement, and anger drives engagement.
3. It’s built on surveillance capitalism
You’re not the customer. You’re the product. Platforms collect up to 1,500 data points on each user. Your behavior is analyzed, packaged, and sold as “prediction products” to advertisers. Every click, every pause, every scroll feeds the machine that predicts and influences your behavior.
Instagram’s own research found it worsens body image for one in three teen girls. They knew. They didn’t care.
Ethical Design Produces Better Outcomes
Research comparing algorithmic versus chronological feeds found:
Chronological feeds substantially decrease time spent on platforms. Users scroll less when content isn’t optimized to keep them engaged. That is the intended result.
Exposure to diverse perspectives increases. Without algorithmic filtering, users see more varied content from friends and connections across the ideological spectrum.
Community platforms outperform social media for meaningful connection. Users prefer online communities over social media for meaningful conversations (36% higher) and sense of belonging (18% higher).
65% of GenZ users feel more confident using community-focused apps like Discord and Reddit than feed-based platforms like Facebook and X.
The Business Model: Can It Actually Sustain?
The obvious question: “If you’re not selling ads or data, how do you make money?” Ethical business models exist. They’re just less profitable than surveillance capitalism.
Mastodon: Decentralized social network with 1 million regular users, no ads, no tracking, no algorithms. Funded through donations and instance hosting.
Signal: Non-profit messaging with end-to-end encryption, minimal data collection, and donation-based funding. Millions of users prioritizing privacy.
Ghost: Publishing platform competing with Medium through subscriptions rather than ads. Growing steadily with ethical monetization.
Wikipedia: One of the most-visited sites globally, funded entirely through donations. Proof that massive scale doesn’t require surveillance capitalism.
The precedent is clear: ethical social media can sustain itself financially while respecting users.
MoroccanZ Invitation: Be Part of the Proof
Ethical social media is a practical alternative. It requires choosing different values and accepting different trade-offs.
Yes, we grow slower than platforms engineered for addiction. We count that as working.
Yes, we’re less “engaging” than feeds optimized for outrage. That’s by design.
Yes, we’re more expensive to run than ad-supported platforms. But we’re not exploiting users to cover costs.
Build Morocco 2.0 on truth, not algorithms. Join the movement.
